Although that is basically what we did today, the experience went much deeper. Our theme for day 2 of Project Impact 2015 was Animal Welfare. Animals […]

Project Impact 2014 – Day 5
Another amazing week down! We always start off the week with the hard stuff…get it done quickly (kinda’ like ripping off a bandaid)! By Wednesday, we’re all, frankly, a bit on the tired side from 3 days of physical, mostly outdoor volunteer work in the hot south Georgia summer sun. Thursday we ease up a […]

Project Impact 2014 – Day 4
Preparedness was today’s theme: being aware of potentially dangerous situations on land and in the water, knowing what to do in case of an emergency…for yourself, your friends, your family, your community. We worked with the Red Cross in the morning on basic first aid and cpr, focusing on the compression technique. The afternoon was […]

Project Impact 2014 – Day 3
Today’s theme, the environment, meant another hot, sweaty day outside. We spent it at Birdsong Nature Center helping remove invasive plant species – from privet to bamboo, campers identified, chopped, dug up, and hauled all they could find around the central grounds. And there was a lot to be found! Afterwards, they helped build a […]

Students “Fall” into Volunteering
As a young man we know likes to say, “Summer outta get a speeding ticket!” (For those of you in need of a punch line, “It goes too fast!”)… Although technically, summer doesn’t end until September 21, once those school doors open, the fall season is officially here as far as we’re concerned. Students and parents alike have […]

Project Impact Day 5 – Reaching Out
Our last day of Project Impact summer service camp was all about reaching out, making new friends, sharing smiles and stories, and making someone’s day a little brighter. The morning was spent at Scott Senior Center. The kids cleaned and organized closets, swept the front and back patios, and made cards and fans in preparation of […]

Project Impact Day 4 – Preparedness
Day 4’s theme was emergency preparedness. This is a very active and hands-on group of kids. All week they have been cleaning, organizing, raking, building, sorting, lifting, shoveling and still seem to have energy to spare. So we were wondering how they would make it through a day that was less physically strenuous, but more […]

Project Impact Day 3 – Animal Welfare & Therapy
Wednesday, day 3, half-way through our week of summer service camp! This morning we helped out at Hands & Hearts for Horses. The kids broke up into teams and tackled: shoveling manure; breaking down, moving and putting back together a large round horse pen; cleaning the barn and stalls; cleaning the classroom; raking the outside; […]

Project Impact Summer Service Camp – Day 2, the Environment
Phew, it’s a hot one. And we spent the entire day outside at Birdsong Nature Center. Luckily we had some clouds overhead in the morning keeping things less scorching. The kids spent the morning emptying, cleaning and organizing the old barn. After only a couple of hours the place was transformed for the better! The […]

Project Impact Day 1 – Human Services
Wow, what a super busy day with a super bunch of kids at Project Impact Summer Service Camp. Today’s theme was human services – making sure people, our neighbors, have the basics: a clean safe home and food. We spent the morning volunteering at Habitat for Humanity helping to frame a house and clearing the […]

The easiest way to explain it is to compare it […]

National Volunteer Week – A Non-Profit Perspective
Throughout Thomas County there are over 300 agencies whose sole purpose is to improve the quality of life for Thomas County’s citizenry. Day in and day out these organizations provide services that would not otherwise be available without their existence. These organizations are most often staffed by one or two people, but take on challenges that require the work of many.

HOTC Salutes Volunteers – Business Spotlight
What do Thomas County’s bankers, insurance agents, medical professionals, shop owners, restaurateurs, technology specialists, and salespeople all have in common? They volunteer! Thomas County’s business community knows the value of giving back and that is one reason why Hands On Thomas County (HOTC), on behalf of the areas non-profits, would like to say, “Thank you”.

HOTC Salutes Volunteers – Community Organizations
As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, Hands On Thomas County would like to recognize the powerhouse of organizations that selflessly engage our community in the spirit of helping others. These groups recognize the value of combining individuals to make a team that is greater than the sum of its parts in energy, spirit and fellowship.

HOTC Salutes Volunteers – The Next Generations
For most kids around the country, Saturday morning means cartoons, cereal and most importantly no school! However, here in Thomas County many a Saturday morning has come to mean something different for the area’s youth – Volunteering. Through Student Hands On Thomas County(SHOTC), Thomas County’s youth have put in over 10,000 hours of community service this year alone. To put that in perspective, it would take an adult with full-time employment over five and one-half years to achieve that number.

HOTC Salutes Volunteers – The Individuals
When asked what makes Thomas County a great place to live, one can expect Thomas County residents to reply with a myriad of answers, but one common thread will be found among all those answers; it’s the people of Thomas County that make it special. Now entering its tenth year of operation, Hands On Thomas County has had the opportunity to witness the actions of Thomas County’s extraordinary citizens first hand as they come together year in and year out to make our community a better place to live by volunteering their time, energy and resources. And, for that we want to say, “Thank you.”

Just Another Day of Service
Saturday, March 16th, was not a holiday and it was not a nation-wide service day, but that didn’t stop Hands On Thomas County (HOTC) and more than 60 of Thomas County’s citizens from using their Saturday to help individuals and non-profit agencies in need.

Become an HOTC Volunteer Ambassador
Thomas County is unique in so many ways: from its history and character, to its active and vibrant sense of community which sets it apart from other places, big and small. This community knows how to work and play hard!
