Based on our popular Project IMPACT Summer Service Camp, Outreach is a mini-camp geared toward local youth organizations and kids that may not typically attend the full week-long camp – we bring summer service camp to them!
We spent our mornings volunteering with kids from the Marguerite Neel Williams Boys & Girls Club. This is our 4th year partnering with the Boys & Girls Club to incorporate volunteer service into their summer camp program and boy did we have fun!
Our overall theme was Reaching Out. We visited and volunteered at 3 different non-profits with the simple gesture to get to know people in our community. Continue reading to learn more.
Day one, we visited Scott Senior Center. We made quilts, weeded the garden, organized the boutique, and even danced with the some of the seniors (talk about fun to watch)! By the end of the day, many new friends were made and our participants learned that sometimes the simplest way to make a difference in your community is to reach out to those who live in it with you.
Day two, we visited Hands & Hearts for Horses. We groomed the horses, walked them around the arena, and then participated in a trust activity where we had to lead one other around the sensory trail. This activity helped develop mutual respect, openness, understanding, and empathy, as well as communication and teamwork skills. It’s a guarantee we all enjoyed this morning of service!
Day three, we visited Thomas Grady Service Center and were immediately greeted with huge smiles and hugs! After learning about how the center helps people in our community, we began to volunteer with their clients. We made pouches, put together cardboard boxes for Textron and applied labels on cat litter bags for Oil Dri. The clients were very helpful and we were glad to work with them!
Overall, it was a great group of kids, and we had a wonderful time with them as they learned from HOTC how they can make a positive difference through volunteer service. We look forward to doing it again next year!
