Calling all locals who can paint, clean, remodel, remove carpet, pressure wash, plus more! Your help is needed at Gabriel Rising – a new non-profit in town whose primary mission is to provide an integrated network of programs, services and opportunities for mild to moderate intellectually and developmentally disabled adults (18–60) who cannot live independently but do not require more advanced medical or psychological care.
Volunteers are needed at the Old Southwestern State Hospital Campus (Rosehaven Building #215) on the following days and times:
- Thursday, June 2 from 9AM – 5PM
- Friday, June 3 from 9AM – 5PM
- Saturday, June 4 from 10AM – 4PM

Help the Backpack Buddies Foundation provide food for local children this summer. Volunteers are needed each Thursday in June and July (except July 4 week) for the following tasks:
- Material Handlers: 4-6 volunteers needed to help move pre-packaged food boxes from the pallets to the cars. (age 12+ please, if under 16 please have an adult present while volunteering)
- Drivers: 15 adults with cars needed to transport the food boxes to various locations within Thomas County (must be 18 or older with a reliable vehicle)
Groups, civic clubs, school athletic teams, teachers, individuals welcome! All activity will take place at the Backpack Buddies Room located at the Thomas County Schools Administration Building (200 N Pinetree Blvd). Work hours are generally from 10:30am to 1:00pm each Thursday. Depending on the job, most volunteers will work one hour. Community service credit (which count towards summer hours) is available for students.

Want to join a volunteer experience that allows you to work outside with animals and children? Hands & Hearts for Horses will hold a Volunteer Orientation that consists of gaining knowledge about our program, what we expect of volunteers, and how to do everything we need you to do! This is a great opportunity for families, friends, coworkers and church groups.
Recommended for ages 12+. No horse experience is necessary. Training Sessions are conducted rain or shine. Please wear sturdy footwear and barn appropriate clothing.

The Douglass High School Alumni Association (DHSAA) is pleased to sponsor the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Festival on Saturday, June 18 in partnership with the No More Shackles Empowerment Mentoring Program. Our goal is to educate everyone about African Americans’ freedom and achievements while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. Learn more here.
This celebration is to create unity in the community, as well as to break pre-judgmental barriers about the origins of the African Americans’ path to freedom. This community-wide event will also offer a parade (at 10:00 am), a car & truck show, delicious food, vendors, local exhibitors, entertainment, and much more!

Hands and Hearts for Horses needs your help with their summer camps! Volunteers are needed to assist with arts and crafts projects, horse riding (leaders and side walkers based on riders’ needs), and other horse related activities from 8am – 3pm, Monday thru Friday, when camp begins on June 27. Volunteers can spend the whole day (preferred) or only part of the day.
Volunteers are needed:
- June 27 – July 1
- July 11 – July 15
- July 18 – July 22
- July 25 – July 29
Additional information:
- Volunteers must wear closed-those shoes and wear conservative shorts and tank tops.
- Please bring your own lunch if coming for the whole day. They do not provide meals.
- Please bring a refillable water bottle so you can fill it up as needed. They will have a water cooler on hand.
- Fridays are water days. Please bring a towel and a change of clothes, and wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet! Volunteers will not be able to wear swim suits without shorts/shirts over them.
