Project Impact Day 4 – Preparedness

Day 4’s theme was emergency preparedness. This is a very active and hands-on group of kids. All week they have been cleaning, organizing, raking, building, sorting, lifting, shoveling and still seem to have energy to spare. So we were wondering how they would make it through a day that was less physically strenuous, but more mentally challenging. The answer? Fabulously! The morning was spent with the Red Cross at Southwest Georgia Technical College learning and discussing different types of disaster situations such as a tornado or hurricane. We made our own bottled tornados and got to tour the Red Cross ERV (emergency response vehicle). After a lunch prepared by SWGTC, the kids were given a tour of the virtual hospital. I won’t go into detail here, but they were highly fascinated and entertained by this amazing high-tech part of the college. In the afternoon, Master Nurse Jill Heard demonstrated basic safety and first aid, including cpr. Our goal for the day was to help the kids see that by being prepared and knowledgeable, they are able to help themselves, their families and their community in times of emergency.
